Majorca

Majorca , a small Mediterranean island in Spain

There was a time when I fell in love with a Latin lover and I moved to a medieval village in the mountains of a small Mediterranean island, Majorca. Like a paradise on Earth, Majorca makes you leave your worries behind. From spring to autumn, this island enchanted me with its own charm; although in the end, I had to say goodbye to it to attend to worldly matters.

A few years later, though I’ve left that love story behind, I couldn't forget the crystal clear sea and blue sky of the island. I organized several tours and brought friends old and new to this wonderful place that I once called my home – Majorca (Spanish: Mallorca).

Majorca , a small Mediterranean island in Spain

Majorca is a Spanish island in the Mediterranean Sea with an area of 3,640 square kilometers and a population of about 900,000. Its capital city, Palma, is a port and an ancient Roman city.

As for transportation, there are flights from major European cities to Majorca; another option is to travel by boat from several ports in the south of Spain. It takes about 45 minutes to fly from Barcelona and about 6-7 hours by boat. For on-island transport, it is best to drive or rent a car, as public transportation is extremely inconvenient.

The island is sunny every day in spring and summer. The best months to visit are from April to September, The peak season is from June to September, during these months accommodation is highly sought after and must be booked at least 3 months in advance to get the ideal hotel at a reasonable price.

If you like the sea, you must go there because, in Majorca, you can find the world's finest sand, the clearest water, and the best beaches, regardless of its location, you will never forget it.

If you have time, of course, it is best to take it slow and stay at the beach every day, enjoying the view and the handsome passers-by. But the reality is that we have limited days off, that’s why I have prepared a four-day itinerary. In my opinion, you have to stay at least four days here, because before and after your stay on the island, you have to spend some time and visit the cities where you have to transfer.

DAY 1

Valldemossa, the most beautiful village in Spain

If you ask me where can you see the most beautiful scenery on the island, it must be Valldemossa, a small medieval village located high in the mountains, it was also my home in the Mediterranean Sea with my Latin lover.

This small village is only 15-20 minutes away by driving from the capital Palma. Here, you can see ancient ruins among the hills. The villagers decorate the front of their stone houses with the most lovely and fresh plants.

The small village is really comfortable, allowing every visitor to forget the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the tranquility of life as it should be.

Chopin once said that Valldemossa is the most beautiful place in the world. TripAdvisor has also recommended it as one of the top 10 most beautiful small villages in Europe. Now I can assure you that my former home in the Mediterranean will not disappoint you.

The medieval city of Palma

Palma, the capital City of Majorca
Palma, the capital City of Majorca

Palma is the capital city of Majorca and the largest city on the island. It was an ancient Roman city in the Middle Ages and has many Gothic buildings. The cathedral along the promenade is very charming under the twilight.

In the city center, you can find many plazas, cafés, bistros, specialty stores, open-air stalls, and even international brand-name stores, you can spend a whole day strolling around. The streets and alleys leading to Plaça Major in the city center also offer a kaleidoscope of unique architectural styles, you will find Renaissance, Baroque, and even Modernism-styled buildings mixed in this area. Whenever my Latin lover took me out, we would go to Plaça Major for a cup of coffee, quietly enjoying each other´s company and savoring the romantic moments of the Mediterranean.

There are more than a hundred beaches on the island, apart from sandy beaches, rocky beaches, virgin beaches, and nude beaches, there are several Blue Flag beaches. The Blue Flag is a top honor established by the Foundation for Environmental Education to encourage beaches and ports to take environmental protection seriously and is a widely recognized eco-mark that must pass tests on water quality, environment, management, safety, service, etc. to be awarded.

In 2022, there were 5,042 Blue Flag beaches in the world; Spain is the world leader with 621 Blue Flag beaches, with more than 20 beaches located in Majorca. Blue Flag beaches are well-equipped with hotels, resorts, international restaurants, shopping spaces, bars, and nightclubs nearby, so you can eat, drink and be merry without the hassle of a long drive.

The Blue Flag beach I visited the most was Playa de Nova Palma, because it was not far from Palma and it was close to Malaguf, a nightclub area, it´s easy to plan an outing throughout the whole day.

Many people choose to take a cruise ship or a private speedboat out to sea, mooring in the water not far from the beach, swimming in the sea! The water is crystal clear with a light green hue, and the sky is blue, it’s a wonderful combination for visitors to enjoy!

Recommended Blue Flag beaches: Playa de Muro / Playa de Formentor / Cala d'Or

Sóller is famous for its historical monuments, such as the iconic 14th-century church, Església de Sant Bartomeu, and the Sa Capelleta Monastery.

Another symbol of the area is the Tranvía de Sóller, an antique tram that connects the old town with the port, passing through orange, lemon, and olive trees in full bloom, you can enjoy the view of the Sierra de Alfàbia mountain range.

After arriving at the Port de Sóller, you can stay on the beach, sunbathe alone with other couples and visitors, and leisurely enjoy a Mediterranean lunch.

Hidden Rocky Beach Sa Calobra

Located in Torrent de Pareis, Sa Calobra is a pristine rocky beach hidden between two cliffs. Although It is a natural beach without development and does not even have a toilet, Sa Calobra offers otherworldly tranquility. The first time I visited here was with my Latin lover. It was in April, and we were the only two people on the beach. We sat quietly under the cliff and watched the waves, it was like being in heaven on earth!

The road to Sa Calobra is very famous, it’s called the Snake Road because of the many twists and turns on the mountain! If such road conditions make you feel dizzy or nauseous, do not go to Sa Calobra by car,  It is better to take a boat from the Port de Sóller to enjoy the cool breeze of the Mediterranean Sea!

Virgin beaches are beaches that have been preserved in their natural beauty. There are many enchanting virgin beaches in Majorca. However, they are usually located in remote areas, and you have to walk a long stretch of rocky or mountainous road under the hot sun to reach them. There are no facilities on virgin beaches, please remember to bring water, food, chairs, towels, parasols, and other supplies before you head to a virgin beach.

Recommended virgin beaches: Es Trenc / Es Dolc and Es Carbo / Cala S'Amarador / Cala Varques / Es Covetes

DAY 4

Lluc Sanctuary

Lluc Sanctuary, located on the mountain, the most sacred place in Majorca

Lluc Sanctuary, located on the mountain, is the most sacred place on the island. Every year in early August, thousands of people make the pilgrimage from Palma, the capital city, up the mountain.  It’s about 50 kilometers away, and the pilgrimage starts late at night to early morning, usually, it takes about 8 to 9 hours to walk, and only a few people make it...

Some people choose to stay overnight at the monastery and then drive off before dawn to see the sunrise over the Mediterranean Sea, you’ll experience the utmost serenity when you feel a connection with Mother Nature.

Torre del Verger is a watchtower built in 1579. Images of the tower appear on many postcards sold here on the island. It is located at the edge of the coast, looking out over the vast Mediterranean coastline, Torre del Verger is a perfect place to take a photo and share it on your social media.

Coves del Drach cave

Coves del Drach cave, a famous cave in Majorca

Majorca has many famous caves, but if you can only go visit one, I would recommend Coves del Drach, one of the largest natural caves in Europe, with countless stalactites and stalagmites inside. It is also recommended that you join a local tour and enjoy a classical music concert in the large amphitheater inside the cavern that you will never forget!

Now that was the four-day itinerary that I have prepared for you. If you still have time, why not visit a vineyard for a wine tasting, go for a relaxing stroll in one of the many lovely towns, or go snorkeling, scuba diving, or play some water sports, there are so many fun things to do in Majorca!

If you visit Majorca in the spring, you can experience nature in its fullest glory. Every year from March to April, Majorca is blooming with flowers and lush green grass. You can see fruit trees like orange trees, lemon trees, and olive trees everywhere, with the charming cherry trees blossoming, wherever you go, it’s a picturesque view. Majorca is such a captivating place, how can you miss it next time you go to Europe?
